Dawson’s Creek was my ultimate teen drama! It first aired when I was 15, losing school, and becoming totally bedridden for a year, and over the following three years while I was wheelchair bound whenever I left the house. It continued until I moved out of home in my 20’s, and I remember excitedly saving money to buy the box set of DVDs at a beach holiday in Caloundra one Christmas. When I was 15, every Tuesday night, I would watch the cast interact and they were my friends who brought me joy and kept my spirit going. They really helped me cope when I was isolated and alone. There was no facebook, I had rare contact with friends, I lost all my abilities and pretty much everything, but they were always with me.
Pacey and Joey were my favourite couple and I loved Jen’s character growth throughout the seasons. Her friendship and support for Jack when he came out really touched me – especially when her fundamentalist Christian Grams offered support and love too. Jen’s kindness and coolness made her one of my all-time favourite fictional characters.
I drew the cast in my Rainbow Bubbles of Collective Effervescence portrait style in Sept 2025. In 2018 when I first used the iPad to draw portraits, one of the first portraits I ever drew was of Dawson’s iconic crying photo. Classic!
On Sept 22 the cast will reunite for a reading of the original script to raise money for F Cancer, as James Van Der Beek is living with stage 3 Cancer.
Thank you, Dawson’s Creek for comforting me through such a traumatic time of my life. I hold you with me in collective effervescence still today. May peace and strength be with you, James. Sending gratitude, love and infinite light to the whole cast.
