Judith Lucy – October 2026

Today, the legendary Aussie comedian Judith Lucy is undergoing a double mastectomy for breast cancer. I drew a portrait of us meeting at St Mary’s in Exile, Brisbane, in 2011, in my ByShi Original Rainbow Bubbles of Collective Effervescence Portrait Style, and channelled her energy and sent her love and infinite light. May peace be with you, Judith Lucy!

Judith Lucy was my favourite comedian growing up in Australia in the 90’s. I was a bit young to stay up for ‘the Late Show’ but I would tape it on video and watch it over and over! Judith, Jane Kennedy, Magda Szubanski and Santo Cilauro were my favourites. Rob Sitch, Tony Martin, Tom Gleisner and Mick Molloy – I remember them all by name. They were iconic.

In 2009 Father Peter Kennedy, Terry Fitzpatrick and the St Mary’s Community were forced to leave the Catholic Church in Brisbane. They continued as a community as St Mary’s In Exile (SMX), and I wrote to them to give them my support and join them in exploring spirituality. Peter wrote back and asked me to do a homily (!) which I did in Nov 2010. Peter and Terry have both retired, but the community still gathers today.

Soon after my homily, Judith Lucy was filming a documentary on her spiritual journey, and on the 27th Feb 2011 she gave the homily at SMX. I was able to go, and met her in person afterwards and gave her a copy of my book ‘Stranger In The Moving Chair.’ It was a real highlight of my life to meet my hero! I remember Judith said she wished I could be at every comedy gig because I laughed loudly, which encouraged everyone else to laugh as well! She was stunned that I could be so bubbly and laugh so much, and yet I was in constant pain. It was so amazing to meet her and tell her I loved her! It was great to hear her preach (at the time I barely realised the significance of being a young Protestant female – and Judith female too – preaching in a former Catholic community! Thank you SMX!)

Judith has continued on her inner journey and has recently been exploring wellness, including experimenting with ayahuasca and even faecal implanting. She was wondering why she was not improving dramatically on the treatment, and then discovered she has breast cancer. She will have a double mastectomy today, and in true Judith Lucy style is handling it with grace and humour, encouraging us all to get our boobies checked.

Sending you love and infinite light, Judith!
